What do you hope to accomplish in the 2018 session?
I’m going to put some bills out there that are going to be a lot different than the ones I’ve had before. One of them is death by dignity – where if a person has cancer, instead of calling hospice in and you sit there and watch your loved one die basically by starvation because they are in so much pain, all they do is take pain medicine and don’t eat. This will give them an opportunity to have every member of their family member there. There’s just a better way to do it.
What do you hope the Legislature will accomplish?
At some point in time teachers are going to have to get a pay raise. Somehow next year we need to come up with one revenue source that deals mainly with teacher pay raises and leave it and stay focused on that. Whenever it’s time for a teacher pay raise, and you have one revenue source to utilize when you need to give teachers raises, then we don’t have to go through all these problems we go through every year, trying to get everyone on board.
What should people know about you?
This is my 13th year. This is probably the most embarrassing year that I’ve had. I know the Democrats aren’t in charge, and I’m not saying that in any negative way. At some point in time, we have to work together, like now. Working together is the only way to solve the problem. I truly hope we can instill that in everybody.
