What do you hope to accomplish in the 2018 session?
I’ve been pretty focused on reforming the budget process. That was a 2016 goal for me. Needless to say, unless we somehow magically reform the process (soon) in the next couple of weeks, that will be a goal of mine.
What do you hope the Legislature will accomplish?
We’ve laid out a pretty good agenda, and I think a lot of that will still be pertinent next year. I think reform in tax policy and reform in the budget process. One thing I believe is gaining momentum is line-item budgeting. I’d like to see apportionment reform. We get 100 percent of the blame, but we only control about 40 percent of the revenue. (The goal is) giving the Legislature the ability again to control where that money goes.
What should people know about you?
I’ve got two little girls and a wife, so certainly that’s where I enjoy spending my free time, in and out of session. They’re certainly always at the forefront of my mind. I do bedtime with my girls, and I sing them a Billy Joel song.
