What do you hope to accomplish in the 2018 session?
Being a minority party member is tough, as far as being able to have these big signature accomplishments through some legislation that you wrote. That being said, this year I hope to be a part of the solution. I have a number of bills out there. There’s one that has to do with seeking justice for victims of rape and sexual assault by getting rape kits tested. And obviously there’s the funding part of it, making sure that we build our way back. I have a bill for Oklahoma’s Promise, I have a bill for funding issues, but outside of those, making sure this is the best state to live in for anyone, for a woman, or for any victim of sexual assault.
What do you hope the Legislature will accomplish?
Finding ways to fund the government without putting it on the backs of the folks who can least afford it is a big thing for me. It really is about obtaining funding, and protecting the folks on the lower end of the income scale from any increase. I think there’s a number of ways we could do that, but I would say without question, finding ways to pump money back into education and health care and similar things is the most important thing that I hope we accomplish this year. Unfortunately, I have some doubts that we will.
What should people know about you?
The most fun that I have is coaching youth sports with my son. I don’t always tell people that because sometimes I take it a little too seriously, but that would undoubtedly be the most fun I have.
